1,885 stand-alone houses
1,071 townhouses, flats and units
288 retirement village units
233 apartments

The seasonally adjusted numbers of new dwellings consented in the June 2020 quarter (compared with the June 2019 quarter) by Region were:

3,700 in Auckland – down 3.9 percent
993 in Waikato – down 0.3 percent
663 in Wellington – down 16.5 percent
1,4887 in rest of North Island – down 0.7 percent
1,577 in Canterbury – up 26 percent
790 in rest of South Island – down 4.2 percent

May 2020

The seasonally adjusted number of new stand-alone houses consented rose 16 percent, after falling 6.7 percent in April 2020. By region, the numbers of new dwellings consented in May 2020 (compared with May 2019) were:
1,367 in Auckland – down 18 percent
341 in Waikato – down 24 percent
325 in Wellington – up 16 percent
587 in rest of North Island – down 1.5 percent
667 in Canterbury – up 50 percent
264 in rest of South Island – down 11 percent.

  • In the year ended February 2020, the actual number of new dwellings consented was 37,882, up 11 percent from the February 2019 year.
  • In February 2020, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented rose 4.7 percent, after falling 2.8 percent in January 2020.

New dwelling consents

In February 2020, 3,285 new dwellings were consented, comprising:

  • 1,994 stand-alone houses
  • 831 townhouses, flats, and units
  • 234 apartments
  • 226 retirement village units.

The number of dwellings consented each month can vary significantly due to timing of large multi-dwelling projects, such as townhouses and apartment buildings.
