Non standards-based criteria

For many building products or systems, there are no relevant standards or published criteria. In these situations it is necessary to decide what an appropriate standard or criteria ought to be.

The simplest method of determining a criteria for a building product or system, is to search for test results for the same type of product or system, and write up a chart of the data.

For more demanding situations (where a risk score is high) it may be necessary to develop a new test method or criteria from scratch. This will usually require the reviewer to have a series of tests carried out with a draft of the new test method, in order to validate the method, the results and criteria against the expected performance of the product or system.
